　　When I moved to Kichijoji and started an English school about 10 years ago, it was quite a nice quiet town. Somehow separate from Tokyo, with itﾕs own atmosphere. There were a few British people living around here and we used to hang out together in Kichijoji, especially on the weekend.
　　 On Sunday morning, I used to ride a rowboat on Inokashira Pond, read the newspaper and take a nap on the boat. I was only disturbed by the passing giant 　swan pedal boats or the occasional shout of "Hora, gaijin da! ". I used to wonder why everyone was so busy on a weekend. The giant swan pedal boats are one of my　"pet hates" about Kichijoji. There used to be only one but I suppose they have mated and there numbers have increased. Noisy and obtrusive, like some cheap　fun-fair attraction. Who knows, one morning the boat staff might find theyﾕve flown away or been sunk by a nature-loving terrorist. The only worse scene than this is the "Pirate" ship on Lake Ashinoko in Hakone. As a foreigner, I obviously miss the deeper sense of nature and beauty that is part of Japanese culture.

　　僕が吉祥寺に越してきて英語学校を始めたのが約10年前、当時ここは比較的静かな好ましい街だった。東京とは一味違う独自の雰囲気があった。あの頃吉祥寺近辺にはイギリス人が結構住んでいて、吉祥寺でよく遊び歩いたものである。とりわけ週末には！
　　日曜の朝、井の頭公園池の手漕ぎボートの上で新聞を読んだり昼寝をしたり〜。煩わされることと言えば、横を通 り過ぎる巨大な「白鳥のペダル式ボート」と、ときたま誰かが叫ぶ「ホラ、ガイジンだ！」の声。週末だと言うのになぜ誰も彼も忙しいのだろうと思ったものだ。
　 　あの「巨大な白鳥」は僕にとって吉祥寺のペットヘイト（個人的な嫌悪の対象）だ。当時１羽だったのだが、つがわせたのだろう、いつの間にか何羽か増えていた。騒々しくて邪魔くさくて安っぽい遊園地のように思えてくる。誰知ることぞ、ある朝係員はこれらの白鳥たちが飛び立ってしまうとか自然愛好テロリストによって沈められてしまうのを見ることになるかもしれない。これに勝る風景と言えば箱根の芦ノ湖に浮かぶ「海賊船」くらいなものだろうか。外国人の僕は明らかに日本文化の一部である深い「自然と美」意識なるものを読みとれないということになる。
